Yesterday, Saturday, was a day of productive domesticity. You know - cleaning, sorting, ironing, knitting, berating kids ... By mid-afternoon, it was obvious that the best solution for Saturday night fare was not a fancy new meal but an old favourite. We ate roast chicken, with a variation on Eton Mess for dessert. It was just about perfect.
Today we had people for lunch - work friends of Spouse, plus their wives and small children. I have to admit I was nervous. I'm not adept at small talk. Fortunately they were all lovely people, only one child threw up, and everyone ate their food. In my world, if you eat what I feed you, you are automatically promoted to 'people I like'. We had beef, feta and olive pie with salad and bread, with lattaiolo (baked custard) and red wine poached pears for dessert.
Tomorrow, unfortunately, is Deadline Week Monday.

So true -- it's much easier to like people who happily enjoy the food we prepare. Dainty or delicate or fussy eaters take a bit more work . . .
Despite often having people round for meals, we don't get many reciprocal invitations - and one of the few couples who we do regularly 'exchange' meals with is vegetarian. While I am quite happy to eat vegetarian (and do at least twice most weeks), it does curb my entertaining somewhat ...
I don't hold with coddling picky eaters too much -- for one thing, they're often less picky that you'd think.
Case in point: we had people over for dinner on Saturday, and I made a delicious salad that included both green beans and cannelini. Sis warned me that her hubs would pick out the cannelini -- so when he had THIRDS(!) she said to him, "But you never eat cannelini at home." To which he replied, "This is different."
Go figure.
Rubi, that is SO true! My paternal grandfather always said he didn't eat anything with garlic or onion in. Whenever he came to stay, my mother would cook exactly as normal (ie just about everything had garlic and/or onion in) and he never refused a thing. He was just not allowed in the kitchen during prep time!
