Kid 1 shaved for the first time today. This makes me feel unspeakably old and sad. He does still sit on my lap from time to time (mostly to annoy me, of course), and hug me when the mood takes him, but he's not my baby anymore. And of course I don't wish an endless infancy on him, but ...

Ah yes, I remember this. Although because my son was small for his age -- relatively late to puberty -- I was mostly just pleased for him by the time it happened. Still, he was my youngest, and while it was fascinating to see (after three daughters) one of my children turning physically into a man (so different -- the cheekbones, the jawline, the Adam's apple!), there was definitely a poignant sense about it.
Yes, it's definitely mixed feelings, isn't it? It's so exciting to see him grow up ... and yet.
